Sexual violence
- 4 out of 10 women attending general practice who had been involved in sexual relationships with a man experience violence.
- Trained volunteers at the Dublin Rape Crisis centre attended the sexual assault treatment unit with 271 victims in 2011.
- 2,339 sexual offences were recorded by an Gardai Siochana in 2010. This figure includes 476 rapes and 1,514 sexual assaults.
- Almost one third of women survivors of sexual violence disclosed that their partner or ex-partner was the perpetrator of the violence.
- Since the introduction of legislation to criminalise rape within marriage in 1990 there has only been one successful conviction under this law.
- According to the aid female homicide media watch (June 2012) another 47 women were killed by someone they knew (e.g. brother, son, neighbour). Thus a total of 118 women were killed by someone they knew.
- In all of the resolved cases 99% of perpetrarors were male and 1% were female.
